I live in mainland China and have two cards: a Visa card from China Merchants Bank and a MasterCard debit card from the same bank. My original plan was simple: use the cards I already had to subscribe to Claude and ChatGPT.
After going through the process, I found that the card was only one part of it. The payment platform, the account region, and any payment security checks could all affect whether a subscription went through.
These are the two routes I tried and the issues I wish I had understood beforehand. This is a record of my own experience; what works for another person will depend on their account and the options available at checkout.
Subscribing through Google Play
The idea is to run an Android emulator on a Mac, install Claude or ChatGPT, and subscribe through Google Play using the app’s purchase flow.
My process was:
- Install Android Studio on the Mac.
- Create and start a Pixel Android virtual device that includes Google Play.
- Open Google Play and sign in to a Google account.
- Download Claude or ChatGPT from the store and sign in to the relevant account.
- Start a subscription in the app and select a payment card through Google Play.
During my attempts, I could select Visa or MasterCard at the Google Play payment step. If you already have one of these cards, this route avoids the extra steps of buying a gift card and redeeming its balance.
Another practical benefit is that the Android emulator runs on the computer. That makes the network setup easier to manage in one place, without configuring a separate physical phone. The emulator’s actual connection still needs checking, though: being able to access a service on the Mac does not guarantee that the app inside the emulator will connect correctly.
Being able to select a card and having a charge approved are separate steps. My experience offers a route to try, but it does not guarantee that every similar card or account will work.
The Apple gift card route
The sequence is straightforward: buy an Apple gift card, redeem it to an Apple ID balance, and use that balance for an in-app subscription.
The purchase channels I considered were:
- Apple’s website.
- Amazon.
- Pony Store within Alipay.
Buying the gift card itself is not particularly complicated. Redeeming the code to an Apple ID is also fairly simple.
I used a US-region Apple ID for this route, so I needed a US account and a gift card for the matching region. A US account was a prerequisite for my particular setup; that does not mean every Apple subscription route requires one.
The part I found difficult came after redeeming the card.
A redeemed balance does not guarantee a purchase
Successfully redeeming a gift card does not mean a subscription can necessarily be purchased immediately. Even with money in the Apple ID balance, a payment security check may still block the purchase.
In the situation I encountered, I needed to wait 72 hours.
That wait was frustrating. I had already bought the gift card and added the balance, but the subscription was still unfinished while I waited for the issue to be handled.
The 72 hours was the waiting period in my case. It is not a universal rule or a promise that every similar restriction will clear automatically after that time. The account’s messages and the outcome provided by support are what matter.
Amazon can add another review
Buying an Apple gift card through Amazon can introduce a separate check before you even reach Apple’s purchase process.
An Amazon account may be restricted or suspended during the purchase process, after which documents may be needed for verification or an appeal. That adds uncertainty to what initially looks like a simple gift card purchase.
This route therefore involves two platforms: buying the gift card on Amazon, then redeeming it and subscribing through Apple. A problem at either stage can delay the whole process.
Which route I would try first
Based on my experience so far, if I already had a Visa or MasterCard, I would try Google Play first. The process is more direct, and I can handle it on my computer.
Apple gift cards remain another option, but I would go into that route knowing that buying the card is only the beginning. Even after the balance arrives, resolving a subscription payment restriction may take more time.
